The Process

Slab Glass Bricks

Kiln firing slab pieces
Kiln
I hand-make all of my art. Most of the art is
made to order, with the
clients suggesting colors and glass type.
I do all
the glass cutting, grinding, foiling, soldering, stringing and
crimping. I also cut the brass rods and then file them smooth.
I string all of the mobiles with nylon coated wire. This ensures durability and gives an increased sense of
connectedness to the mobiles, unlike mobiles that are strung
with fishing line. Creating and constructing the
mobiles is labor and time intensive, but it is very rewarding
and enjoyable.
Some of my
mobiles are made with Slab glass (dalles de verre). The glass is approximately 1" thick. The glass comes
in bricks and I break, chisel, cut and then grind the
glass into unique shapes. I then kiln fire the slab chunks to
help smooth the edges. I may still have
to grind the chunks to remove any sharp edges. The glass mobiles constructed from this
glass are also whimsical, but have a greater sense of solidity
than the sheet glass mobiles. As with all my mobiles, I use
metal wire to hang each individual piece.
For
the Large Abstract mobiles, I select
high-end sheet glass and cut and grind it into irregular shapes
- no
two pieces are alike.
The Wire Glass Mobiles are made of heavy gauge copper wire that I twist and turn
into whimsical designs; the glass is then soldered to the wire.
The Gyra Glass
Mobiles are especially hard to balance; but the result is a four tiered mobile
that rotates and changes dimension. As with the large, standard and mini mobiles, I use sheet glass in constructing these
whimsical mobiles.
None of
my glass mobiles are exactly alike and I continue to
experiment with new shapes and designs. The glass mobiles should be displayed
indoors or in a sheltered porch. I do use lead to solder the
mobiles and flowers. If you have a concern over lead and
children, you can request that lead-free solder be used.
